Woman charged with murdering ‘very kind’ boy, 6, appears in court

A woman accused of murdering a six-year-old boy who was living with her has appeared in court.

Karolina Zurawska, 41, is charged with killing Alexander Zurawski after attempting to murder a 67-year-old man earlier in the day.

Police were called on Thursday to a bungalow in Swansea, where Zurawska and Alexander had been living together, and found the boy dead.

Zurawska appeared before a hearing at Swansea Magistrates Court with a bruise under her left eye.

She spoke only to confirm her personal details and was ordered to appear at Swansea Crown Court tomorrow. She was remanded in custody in the meantime.

Alexander’s family described him as a ‘very kind, very clever and very mature’ boy who ‘loved playing with his little sister and playing with his dog Daisy’.

In a tribute they said: ‘Alexander was always well behaved and never naughty.

‘Alexander was always helpful. Always eager to assist with cooking and cleaning.

‘Alexander spoke both English and Polish and would often correct his parents with their English if they got words wrong. He was amazing.’

Neighbours said the family were originally from Poland and had moved into the property in a cul-de-sac within the past year.

One said: ‘The kids would always say hello as there are plenty of kids on this street.

‘I wasn’t home last night when it happened but it’s just awful. Poor little bugger.’

Bethan Peterson, headteacher of Whitestone Primary School, where the victim was a pupil, said: ‘We’re devastated to learn of the tragic death of Alexander.

‘Alexander was a delightful, determined little boy whose tenacity and positive demeanour ensured his success in all he undertook.

‘He was an extremely loved and popular boy amongst his peers, staff and with all who knew him. He will be sadly missed.

‘Appropriate support will be made available to children, staff and all those within our school community who are affected.

‘We would ask that our school community’s privacy be respected at this difficult time.’
