Man arrested for strangling woman

A 20-year-old man was arrested after having allegedly attempted to strangle a woman to death, police said on Monday.

The man was arrested by the British Bases police in Akrotiri on Sunday.

The woman had reported to police in the Famagusta district on Saturday that she had been attacked inside the hotel room in which she was staying by a man she “had met shortly beforehand”.

The man reportedly beat her and then attempted to strangle her, causing her to lose consciousness.

When the woman regained consciousness, she called for help, before people nearby called an ambulance.

She was then taken to the Famagusta general hospital in Paralimni and administered first aid.

The man will appear in court on the British base on Monday, before being transferred to the Republic of Cyprus’ authorities.

The police’s investigation into the matter is ongoing.
