Alasdair Gold thinks Johnny Cardoso deal is a warning for one Spurs player
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold predicts that Ange Postecoglou could replace Yves Bissouma with Johnny Cardoso next summer if the Mali international does not prove that he can be trusted.
Tottenham have an option to sign Cardoso
As part of the agreement to take Giovani Lo Celso back to Real Betis on deadline day, Tottenham reportedly acquired an option to buy young Betis midfielder Cardoso.
It has been reported that Spurs could sign the USA international for a fixed fee of €30m (£25.2m) in the summer of 2025 (Tom Bogert).
Gold has now pointed out that Postecoglou has plenty of options for the number six role at the moment, with Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Sarr and Archie Gray battling it out for a place in the side.
A warning to Yves Bissouma
However, Gold says that Cardoso could be a strong option for Postecoglou next summer if Bissouma is not able to showcase consistently this season.
The journalist states that the 28-year-old’s long-term future at Spurs is still unclear and if he is not able to showcase discipline on and off the pitch, the Betis star could take his place in the squad.
Postecoglou also has Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray to choose from in that pivot role if needed this season.

It does not make sense to think a year ahead as a lot can change between now and then.
Bentancur could also potentially be the one to make way for a new number six next summer as we have not seen consistent evidence yet that he can sustain his pre-injury level of performance.
