‘Something needs to change’ fumes Gary Neville as he calls for drastic rule change after ‘bizarre’ transfer window

GARY NEVILLE has demanded “dramatic” rule changes after the “most bizarre transfer window ever”.

The Manchester United legend fears Premier League clubs are forced to offload players they want to keep – including home-grown talent.

Scott McTominay’s Man Utd exit to Napoli was partly blamed on financial rules

The former England defender blasted the Prem’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

He also hinted that Scott McTominay’s departure from Old Trafford to Napoli is a painful example of the problems.

United boss Erik ten Hag admitted he’d rather have retained the 27-year-old midfielder, who had been at United since the age of five.

And Nev told Sky Sports: “It’s the most bizarre transfer window.

“I think PSR is starting to be applied by the Premier League.

“And that’s why we are seeing a lot of clubs, including Manchester United, having to navigate around… selling players they maybe wouldn’t want to.

“PSR was never designed so clubs had to sell their best academy players and that’s what we are seeing.

“So something needs to change dramatically in this next 12 months in terms of the rules.”

Neville reckons the rules are wrongly stifling the efforts of Saudi-backed Newcastle to match the Prem’s traditional big clubs.

Toon chief Eddie Howe needs to balance the books rather than just splash out on more stars

In contrast, big-spending giants like champions Manchester City face the same restrictions – but have long had an elite squad in place.

Neville stressed, however, he believe in some regulations to prevent reckless spending.

The 49-year-old wants a new look at the rules – whilst still ensuring “security” and “sustainability”.
