“Needs to change” – Neville slams “bizarre” transfer window, highlights Man Utd & Newcastle concerns in particular

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has slammed the current Profit and Sustainability Rules in the Premier League that have led to a bizarre transfer window.

The transfer deadline has now passed, and in some ways we saw most clubs being really cautious this summer, with the three main title contenders Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool barely making any changes to their squads.

Arsenal in particular also made a lot of sales of academy players, something we’ve also seen a lot of at other big names like Chelsea and Manchester United.

See below as Neville feels the current rules need to change as we shouldn’t be seeing clubs needing to cash in on their homegrown players, while it also seems up-and-coming challengers like Newcastle are being held back from really investing and moving up the table…

It’s still worth noting that Arsenal were able to spend big money on two top players in Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino, while the loan signing of Raheem Sterling could also end up being a smart bit of business.

United, meanwhile, also recruited some superb young talent in the form of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, alongside more proven players like Manuel Ugarte and Matthijs de Ligt.

And besides, signings aren’t everything, as we’ve seen clubs like Brighton work wonders on a shoestring budget in recent times, so perhaps this new trend can force all clubs to be a bit more sensible with their spending and all-round squad planning, unless you’re Chelsea, of course.
