Report: How much Spurs would have to pay Real Betis to sign Johnny Cardoso
While some reports indicate that Tottenham have the option to buy Johnny Cardoso next summer, others suggest that the Lilywhites could also retain a sell-on clause on the Real Betis midfielder if they wish to do so.
Giovani Lo Celso returns to Real Betis
Giovani Lo Celso completed a late return to Betis on transfer deadline and according to reports, part of the agreement for the Argentine’s transfer saw Spurs acquire an option to buy Cardoso.
The young defensive midfielder caught the eye after breaking into Manuel Pellegrini’s starting eleven last season and it now turns out that Spurs could land him for a fee of around €25m-€30m (£21m-£25.2m) next summer.
This is the claim made by journalist Pepe Elias, who insisted that the option to buy can only be activated in the summer of 2025 and will expire if it is not activated by the North London side.
Spurs have a sell-on clause for Johnny Cardoso
However, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has provided a slightly different take on the deal, claiming that Spurs have the option to turn it into a sell-on clause.
He explains that if Tottenham decide against buying the USA international next summer, they would automatically have a sell-on clause for the player, even though they have never owned him.
Spurs will thus have to choose between bringing the player into Ange Postecoglou’s squad or waiting to cash in on his eventual transfer away from Real Betis.
Spurs Web Opinion
It is clear that Betis did not have the funds to complete a deal for Lo Celso and Tottenham thus had to come up with a way to make up the difference.
The Lilywhites clearly decided that Cardoso was the best option to bet on in the Betis squad.
