Westerville rivalries unite to give back

WESTERVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) -- Football Friday Nite can bring fierce rivalries, but people in Westerville are using their rivalry game to give back to the community.

High schools are joining forces with the Westerville Area Resource Ministry, or WARM, to hold a canned food drive at Friday's battle for Westerville. Westerville South and Westerville Central are competing on the field, but off the field students and parents are encouraged to bring canned food and dry good donations.

WARM said food insecurity does not just affect poor or homeless individuals and families. They say more and more people in the middle class are also having trouble regularly putting food on the table.

According to WARM's website, it provides assistance with food to people living in Westerville through its Choice Market, and online food assistance service where qualifying individuals can shop online through their current inventory for their families. Families buy items via points, not money, which are assigned based on the number of people in a household.

Another food drive will be held at the next battle for the city, when Westerville North takes on Westerville South on Sept. 27.
