Oregon ban on hard-to-trace ghost guns goes into effect Sunday

Largely untraceable firearms known as ghost guns will be banned across Oregon starting Sunday after a federal judge denied a legal challenge to the prohibition. Ghost guns are privately made and don’t have serial numbers. By contrast, firearms manufactured by licensed companies are generally required to have serial numbers that allow officials to trace them back to the manufacturer, the dealer and the original purchaser. A lawyer for the Oregon Firearms Federation and the Firearms Policy Coalition Inc. had argued in court that self-made weapons without serial numbers are common and requiring his clients to add serial numbers to their guns or gun parts would be impractical.
