Sand Lake man sentenced for assaulting state trooper

SAND LAKE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Rensselaer County District Attorney's Office announced that Joseph Dominy, 19, of Sand Lake, was sentenced on August 30 to seven years in state prison for the felony assault of a New York State trooper. Dominy pleaded guilty to second-degree assault on May 31.

On March 1, Dominy was stopped by state police on Johnny Cake Lane in Sand Lake while illegally riding an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV). As part of his guilty plea, Dominy admitted to fleeing the stop, resulting in a trooper being dragged by the ATV for 200 yards and getting pulled under the vehicle.

Dominy was eventually located and taken into custody. The trooper suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries which required surgery.

"His actions affected the life and career of a Law Enforcement Officer, if he had obeyed the officer, this never would have happened," said Chief Assistant District Attorney Matt Hauf. "Fortunately, body-worn cameras worn by the Trooper captured the incident while the officer was being dragged, this helped us gather the evidence we needed to prosecute him."

In addition to prison time, Dominy was ordered to serve a three-year term of post-release supervision.
