Spurs have already bagged a number of their transfer targets this summer, but one player they had on their wishlist has stayed with his club. That’s not for the want of trying on Tottenham’s behalf, though, and it turns out the player was keen on the move, too.

Deal was close, but unlikely to happen now

All summer, Spurs have been linked with a whole host of dynamic midfielders who could improve Ange Postecoglou‘s options in the middle of the park.

One name very strongly linked with the Lilywhites was Jacob Ramsey, but talk surrounding the Aston Villa midfielder has died down now.

However, according to Ben Jacobs, the Villa man was very receptive to the idea of a switch to Spurs, and a verbal approach was made by the North London club.

Jacobs told The Last Word on Spurs: “What we can confirm is that the interest in Jacob Ramsey is legitimate, and Tottenham tried verbally on more than one occasion.

“The only thing in Tottenham’s favour, I was always told the player — even with Villa having Champions League football and Spurs not — he was keen on the move, liked the idea of London, would’ve come with a wage increase.

“There’s always that outside chance that you just try your luck and see if you can force the player to help you get that move over the line. But it feels at this moment as if it’s over for this window.”

The swap deal that never was

It had previously been claimed that an agreement was in place between Spurs and Villa to arrange a swap deal involving Ramsey and Giovani Lo Celso (DSport).

However, The Athletic revealed that the situation changed once Villa made some sales and got back on the right side of Profitability and Sustainability Rules. Then, it is said, the Midlands club no longer needed or wanted to let Ramsey go.

I’ll be honest, I was never crazy about the idea of us going after Ramsey. I think he’s a good player, who probably still has a lot of potential to get better. But I don’t think he immediately improves our squad.
