History of Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty, an icon recognised around the world, was brought to life by the Japanese company Sanrio.

Yuko Shimizu designed the character, who made her first appearance in 1974.

She started off on a small vinyl coin purse, enchanting fans with her endearing and straightforward appearance: a white cat adorned with a red bow and no mouth.

Named Kitty White, she is depicted as a British girl residing in London, a nod to Japan’s admiration for Western culture at the time.

By the late 1970s, Hello Kitty had become a cultural sensation in Japan and began to capture hearts globally.

Over the years, she transformed from a simple character on various products to an emblem of kawaii (cute) culture, gracing items ranging from apparel and accessories to household goods and even airplanes.

Hello Kitty’s charm knows no boundaries of age or gender, cementing her status as a cherished figure worldwide. Today, she stands as a powerful brand with an enduring impact on popular culture.
