Australian Star’s Forced Retirement after Just One International match- Detail

Former Australian Test opener Will Pucovski has been forced to take retirement from professional form of cricket. Pucovski has faced a long series of one-after-other injuries all the way through his career. Most of these injuries have been because of hits to his head that have resulted in concussions.

In march 2024, he suffered another concussion and was ordered to retire as hurt since Riley Meredith hit him. This forced him to opt out of the contract with Leicestershire for the whole English summer along with keeping him out for the remaining Australian summer. Apart from physical hits, Pucovski stated that dealing with constant injuries resulted as a huge effect on his mental and emotional health.

Though Cricket Victoria, his state association, offered him a contract for 2024/25, there was a catch in it. Cricket Australia told CV that the contract will have to be kept held until Pucovski gets evaluated by a committee. This committee will include representatives from the CA, CV, along with independent medical experts.

9News, an Australian media organisation, has reported that the committee has made a decision to not let Pucovski play any further, which means whether he likes it or not but he has to retire at the age of 26.

“My understanding is that an independent panel of experts recommended Pucovski retire three months ago, and all that’s left is for Cricket Victoria and his team to formalise that contractually. The news doesn’t come as a surprise to teammates of Pucovski who haven’t seen him at training all pre-season, in fact he’s been traveling overseas,” said the 9News reporter.
