THE full list of storm names for the 2024/25 season has been revealed by the Met Office.

The new storms list – first launched in 2015 – runs from early September until late August the following year, coinciding with the beginning of autumn.

Last week Storm Lilian, which brought strong winds exceeding 70mph to northern parts of England and Wales, became the 12th named storm of the 23/24 season and the first time the letter L has been used for the name.

James, Lewis and Mavis are all included in the new list in honour of figures from the Met Office’s 170-year history.

The forecaster said James is named after Group Captain James Stagg.

He was the chief meteorologist responsible for advising General Dwight Eisenhower on the weather forecast for the D-Day landings.

Lewis Fry Richardson is mentioned because he developed a theory that applied mathematics and physics to create weather forecasts using computers

Mavis is named after Mavis Hinds, who worked on the earliest Met Office computers.

Along with Met Eireann in Ireland and KNMI, the Dutch weather service.

Meteorologists name storms so that the communication of severe weather is easier.

Will Lang, who leads responses in times of severe weather for the Met Office, said: “This year, as we celebrate our 170th birthday, it’s great to be able to honour those who have had an impact on our long history of pioneering weather and climate science services.”

Earlier this year, severe storms swept across the UK, causing significant disruptions for many Brits.

Torrential showers and blisteringly strong gales battered Britain as Storm Henk brought misery to many across the country.

Paramedics and firefighters scrambled to a road in Orpington, south London after a woman was crushed by a tree.

A spokeswoman added that crews had responded to 30 calls in one afternoon about trees, scaffolding, roof tiles, solar panels and roofing.

Around 114 flood warnings and 261 flood alerts were issued across the UK.

It came just days after the nation was battered by Storm Gerrit which brought 75mph galeforce winds, snow and two weeks’ worth of rain to much of Britain.

Homes and shops up and down the country were flooded and many were seen trying to save their possessions.

Not long after Storm Henk, the Met Office issued a rare red warning tornado alert.

Forecasters warned Brits to not “sleep near windows” as Storm Isha brought heavy downpours and ferocious gales to the UK.

Flights up and down the country were plunged into mayhem with many being grounded or having to land at alternative airports.

Hundreds of passengers had to be kept on planes for their safety, according to reports online.

It comes after, Brits flocked to the beach yesterday as temps reached 29°C – just days after the Met Office issued rain warnings.

And the Met Office issued a warning about a sulphur dioxide gas cloud set to hover above the UK.
