UN condemns Israeli military raids in West Bank

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has reacted to the Israeli military operations in the West Bank, accusing Tel Aviv of violating international laws.

In a statement, the High Commissioner said that Israel’s military operations in the occupied West Bank are being conducted in a manner that violates international law.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also responded to the operations, which began a few days ago, urging Tel Aviv to avoid exacerbating tensions further.

The Israeli military has launched a major operation in the West Bank, describing it as an “anti-terrorism” effort to neutralize potential threats of a new front against Israel in the occupied West Bank.

Reports indicate that this is the largest military action by Israel in the West Bank in over two decades.

Palestinian officials have confirmed the death of at least eleven people during the operation, while the Israeli military claims to have eliminated “five terrorists” in an attack on a mosque in Tulkarm.

The Israeli military has targeted cities such as Jenin and Tulkarm in the West Bank during this operation.

The UN Secretary-General, noting the regional instability this conflict threatens, has called for an immediate halt to the Israeli operations in the occupied West Bank.

The United States has also responded to the operation by imposing new sanctions against Israeli settlers for their violence against Palestinians.

Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, stated that “settler extremist violence in the West Bank causes severe human suffering, damages Israeli security, and undermines prospects for peace and stability in the region.” He emphasized the need for the Israeli government to hold those responsible for violence against civilians accountable.

In reaction to the Israeli actions, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has canceled his planned visit to Saudi Arabia, issuing a statement accusing the U.S. of supporting Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and contributing to the ongoing conflict against the Palestinian people.

The ongoing military operations by Israel in the West Bank, along with international responses and criticisms, underscore the heightened tensions and the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region.
