5.4 magnitude earthquake shakes Badakhshan, Afghanistan

0

The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed a relatively strong earthquake in Afghanistan. The quake, with a magnitude of 5.4, occurred at a depth of 224.3 kilometers and struck 28 kilometers southwest of Eshkashim in Badakhshan.

The Disaster Management Authority of Badakhshan has also confirmed the earthquake, noting its impact in the “northeast and other parts of the country.” The epicenter has been identified as the Zebak district in Badakhshan.

Earlier, sources in Kabul reported an earthquake in the capital. It appears that the tremors from the Badakhshan earthquake caused shaking in Kabul and other regions of the country.

The earthquake struck at 10:26 AM today, Thursday, August 29 and was felt across the northeastern provinces.

So far, there have been no reports of damage or casualties resulting from the earthquake.

Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including earthquakes, landslides, avalanches, flooding, and droughts.

A lack of effective disaster management and response mechanisms compounds this vulnerability. The ongoing challenges highlight the need for improved preparedness and response strategies to mitigate the impacts of such disasters on Afghanistan’s communities.
