While working on Alice By Heart in 2015, the two started “hooking up. We would go to the stairwell during break and make out in the stairwell, and we were together for a couple months.”
However, Ben says he “kind of panicked” and sent Noah a super long text, a “dissertation,” saying how he didn’t want to jeopardize their friendship by dating.
“I was like, ‘I feel we’re going to be friends for our whole lives and I’m worried if we jump into something, it’s going to ruin our chance to be friends, and I don’t think we’re going to stay,’” he recalled. “Basically now I can tell in hindsight, like met someone who actually, we saw each other and it freaked me out. So, I was like, ‘Let’s be friends,’ and he was like, ‘I hate you.’”
“Then we did become friends for a while and we would kind of like, you know, every so often at somebody’s birthday or something, like kissy kissy, and then finally, the beginning of 2020, right before the pandemic, we were like, we got to do this,” Ben shared.
If you recall, Noah was actually the first actor to replace Ben in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway!
After dating officially for over two years, Ben popped the question and proposed in November 2022, and Noah later proposed back in May 2023.
Earlier this year, Ben opened up about his proposal while appearing on The Jennifer Hudson Show.
