NFL Rumors: Bailey Zappe Joins New Team After Patriots Release
It took only a day after the New England Patriots released Bailey Zappe for the signal-caller to find a new home in the NFL.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Chiefs signed Zappe to their practice squad. The move came after Kansas City cut Chris Oladokun and Ian Book on Tuesday as part of roster cutdown day. Zappe will join Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz in the quarterback room.
Zappe was cut by the Patriots following a summer where the third-year quarterback struggled to earn consistent reps in a room with Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye and Joe Milton III, whom Zappe was competing with for the third QB role.
The 2022 fourth-round pick became a fan favorite during his first two seasons in New England, but when he stepped in for Maye during the first preseason game, fans booed Zappe.
The 25-year-old opened up about his lack of reps in practice and was praised by coaches and his teammates for how he handled the situation.
Zappe enters Kansas City in somewhat familiar territory. Texas Tech offensive coordinator Zach Kittley coached Mahomes and Zappe in college with the Red Raiders and Western Kentucky, respectively.
The former Patriots quarterback ended his New England career with 1,272 passing yards, six touchdowns and nine interceptions.
