Chris Evans makes hilarious confession to Liam Gallagher about seeing Oasis at Knebworth 28 years after legendary gig

LEGENDARY broadcaster Chris Evans was one of the chroniclers of the Oasis, Britpop era, as the powerhouse presenter of the Radio 1 breakfast show in the 90s.

But despite being one of the enfant terribles of the era, the 58-year-old confesses that he has no memory of being at Knebworth, Oasis’s career defining gig in 1996, where 250,000 fans flocked to see them play live.

Speaking on The Chris Evans Breakfast show on Virgin Radio today he cannot remember the event at all.

“Honestly, this is a pinky promise… I genuinely can’t remember being there,” he said. “And I’m not larging it.

“Everyone going, ‘Oh, that’s cute. You would say that because you got to say that to keep up this sort of the signature facade of the 90s,’ but I genuinely still can’t remember being there.

“I didn’t know whether we went or not. We clearly did go. I still can’t remember it, even though there is this photographic evidence.

“There’s loads of photographs of us there, but I can’t remember it.”

The broadcaster also let slip that he hadn’t actually heard the news about the reunion until a text came through asking if he’d like to appear on ITV’s This Morning to discuss his memories of the 90s.

He said: “The first I heard about it was via a text, and the text simply said, ‘This Morning want to know if you’re available to come on for a chat tomorrow re: the Oasis reunion,’ and I just texted back ‘What?’ because I didn’t know. I had no idea,”

Evans, who has interviewed the Gallagher brothers on numerous occasions over the years, having witnessed their rise to fame, also discussed their enduring appeal.

He said: “They were the perfect blend of fantastic, anthemic, profound, famous and infamous.

“They were so interesting, and they were so sort of knobbly compared to Blur.

“Blur were brilliant, by the way. I love Blur. But it was just a better story. It was a grittier story, wasn’t it?”

Looking forward to 2025, Chris predicted an eventful year for British music. “So excited for them, for you, for us, for the business, for Great Britain. Tick, tick, tick, tick. All the ticks.”

Born in Warrington, Chris Evans first came to prominence in the 1990s as the co-host of the Channel 4 show The Big Breakfast.

He then became a star of prime time telly with his hit game show Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush which was made by Ginger Media Group his own production Company.

He also presented the Channel 4 show TFI Friday in 1996, while simultaneously working on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show at which point he was one of the biggest stars in Britain.

Evans eventually resigned from the latter live on air in 1997, after Radio 1 refused to allow him to work a four-day week.

Later he presented BBC’s The One Show on Fridays between 2010 and 2015, and later became the lead host of Top Gear in 2015 after the sacking of Jeremy Clarkson.

However he quit after one series amid poor reviews and weak ratings.

Evans is married to wife Natasha Shishmanian, and share four children – Noah, 13, Eli, nine, and three-year-old twins Walt and Boo.
