German Chancellor says more migrants will be deported to Afghanistan

Following criticisms of Germany’s immigration policy, Olaf Scholz announced on Wednesday that more migrants will be deported to Afghanistan and Syria.

After the deadly attack on Friday, August 23, the German government faced strong criticism from opposition parties and public pressure. In this attack, carried out by a 26-year-old Syrian with a knife at a festival in the western city of Solingen, three people were killed, and eight were injured.

Scholz emphasized that criminals with serious convictions do not have the right to stay in Germany.

He stated in an interview with ZDF Germany on Wednesday evening that he does not intend to make fundamental changes to asylum laws but supports the return of more migrants to Afghanistan and Syria.

Scholz emphasized that border controls will be strengthened but the government does not intend to reject Afghan and Syrian asylum seekers without evaluating their applications at the border.

Following the recent incident, Friedrich Merz, the leader of the opposition to the German government, called for a halt to the acceptance of Afghan and Syrian migrants and emphasized the need to change asylum laws. According to German asylum law, migrants can apply for citizenship after five years of residence in Germany.

In response to the request to stop accepting Afghan and Syrian refugees, the Prime Minister stated, “It is absolutely clear that we will not violate international agreements that Germany has signed. We will adhere to EU laws and our constitution.”

He also stressed, “We ensure the possibility of returning to Afghanistan and want to do this for Syria. Criminals with serious convictions have no right to stay here.”

Scholz also commented on gun laws, stating that the government has a strict plan in this regard but warned that it should not be expected that all violent incidents will be stopped with these laws.

On August 24, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, declaring that one of its members carried out the act “to avenge Muslims in Palestine and other places.”
