Iran deports over 50,000 Afghan migrants from Alborz province in past year

Mojtaba Abdollahi, the governor of Alborz Province, has announced that over the past year, more than 59,000 “illegal” Afghan migrants have been deported from this province alone.

IRNA news agency reported on Wednesday, quoting Mr. Abdollahi, stating that there has been significant activity on social media related to “Afghan phobia,” which does not reflect the actual situation.

He emphasized that the presence of foreign migrants in Alborz Province must comply with the laws.

Meanwhile, reactions to the expulsion of Afghan migrants continue from countries such as Iran and Pakistan.

Previously, Iran’s Interior Minister, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, also emphasized the expulsion of Afghan migrants from the country, adding that “illegal residents” must leave Iran by the end of the Solar year 1403.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriations, the Taliban, in the past year, more than 1,799,000 people have returned to Afghanistan from Iran, Pakistan, and other countries.

The ongoing expulsion of Afghan migrants from neighbouring countries raises concerns about the humanitarian situation faced by returning refugees. Many returnees find themselves in dire circumstances, lacking basic amenities and shelter amidst Afghanistan’s ongoing challenges with security and economic stability.

Upon their return, Afghan migrants often struggle to find adequate employment opportunities due to the country’s fragile economy and limited job prospects.

This exacerbates their integration and livelihood challenges, underscoring the need for international support and sustainable development initiatives to address these issues.

Meanwhile, migration policies and enforcement efforts respond to regional dynamics, and the humanitarian needs of Afghan returnees must be prioritized to ensure their well-being and successful reintegration into society.
