According to the United States Department of Labor — and they should know — President Grover Cleveland signed a law on June 28, 1894, making the first Monday in September a national holiday for Labor Day (www.dol.gov/general/laborday/history).
Government offices — Los Angeles city and county, national and state — courts, libraries and schools are normally closed for a federal holiday.
Here is a sampling of services that are closed or have an altered schedule on Sept. 2

Trash: Pickup schedule for Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment customers is delayed by one day. Monday’s trash will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday’s trash will be picked up on Wednesday, and so on through the week. 800-773-2489.
