MANILA, Philippines – For two years in a row, Western Visayas has hired the most number of persons with disabilities to fill government positions.

Based on data from the Civil Service Commission (CSC), Region 6 has hired 20.67% or 1,701 of 8,248 PWDs working in the government as of June 30, 2024. Last year, the region had about the same percentage of PWD workers at 20.67% with 1,699 employees out of the 8,218 PWDs employed as of June 2023.

Western Visayas has 142,468 career and non-career civil servants, which is 6.99% of the 2.037 million civil servants nationwide according to the Inventory of Government Human Resources.

The CSC has encouraged hiring workers without discrimination, especially in government agencies by promoting inclusivity via its Equal Opportunity Principle (EOP) in hiring processes. The EOP aims to provide an equal playing field for individuals regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, civil status, disability, religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation.

There are currently 4,592 male and 3,656 female PWD workers hired by different government agencies across the country.

Metro Manila — home to 20.9% or 425,927 government workers – has 1,600 PWDs working in government agencies.

Ranking third after the capital region is Region 4, with 261,338 government workers from both Mimaropa and Calabarzon and accounting for 12.83% of civil servants. Mimaropa and Calabarzon have hired 970 PWDs to fill positions in their government agencies. – Rappler.com
