Patriots’ Jacoby Brissett Opens Up About Injury Ahead Of Week 1

If Drake Maye starts at quarterback for the Patriots in Week 1, it won't be because of an injury to his fellow signal-caller.

Playing behind a porous offensive line, Jacoby Brissett took a brutal sack minutes into New England's preseason finale against the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Brissett landed squarely on his left shoulder and exited the road contest after playing only seven snaps.

Jerod Mayo's comments about Brissett after the exhibition suggested the 31-year-old did not sustain a serious injury from the hit. Brissett ultimately confirmed that indication Tuesday while speaking with WEEI.

"It's good," Brissett said of his shoulder, as transcribed by ESPN's Mike Reiss. "I think it was more of a precautionary measure. I hadn't gotten hit in eight months, so it kind of surprised me more than anything. I'm excited, ready for the season ... I feel 100% fine."

With a clean bill of health, Brissett most likely will be behind center for New England when it opens its campaign Sept. 8 in Cincinnati. Even though Maye outplayed his more experienced teammate in the preseason, the Patriots probably would be wise to have the rookie on the bench to start the season.

Maye believes he would be ready to take the reins of the offense if his number is called, though.
