Greens reiterate opposition to Petra tou Romiou beach plans
Petra tou Romiou, the mythological birthplace of Aphrodite, is an “environmentally and culturally rich area” and it should not be developed in the name of unrestrained enrichment, the Cyprus Greens have said.
In a letter to Deputy Minister of Tourism Costas Koumis, Greens president George Perdikis wonders how a tourist beach with sunbeds and umbrellas blended with this Natura 2000 protected area and important birdlife habitat.
Perdikis expresses the Greens’ opposition to the creation of an organised beach at Petra tou Romiou and points out that other ministries, as well as the EU, also have a say in the matter.
He says Koumis will have to confer with the ministries of agriculture, interior and transport, as well as the deputy ministry of culture.
“I believe that such a site, strongly linked to the traditions and myths of our people, cannot be treated as just another tourist beach,” Perdikis says in his letter.
