New Iberia homicide victim was a loving caregiver, family says

NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) -- The eruption of gunfire outside a home in New Iberia late Sunday has left three young children without a mother.

Dewanna Broussard, 31, was one of two people whose lives were taken at the end of Sofas Street. The other is 36-year-old Kasey Egbi, also of New Iberia, who is attributed by Sofas Street residents of saving the life of a third victim.

Broussard's family are shocked by the young woman's death. They said Broussard was the life of the party and deserved the bright future that was ahead of her and her children.

Jamica Paul, Broussard's cousin and close friend, said losing her favorite cousin is beyond painful. She said she was doing homework when she got the call about Broussard being shot.

"When I got the phone call that she was shot, I threw my laptop because I'm like, what? Like it was so unexpected for her and by the time I walked out the door to my car, they said she was gone," Paul said.

Paul said she is angry that her cousin was taken in such an unexpected way.

While sharing memories of Broussard, Nichole Gale said the young mother was one of the most helpful people you could ever meet.

"She helped everybody. She helped people at restaurants in New Iberia. She just volunteered her services to do whatever," Gale said.

Her family said they are still grappling with the fact she is no longer here, saying the shooting is "senseless and she didn't deserve to be killed."

Paul said her family is also mourning for Broussard's children, who no longer have a mother.

The family said they are concerned about how Broussard's death will impact her children, who are aged 8, 11, and 12.
