Police: Bicyclist struck by vehicle while fleeing officers

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A man was seriously injured after he was struck by a vehicle in the city of Schenectady on Tuesday. Police said he was fleeing officers at the time of the crash.

Around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, police saw a man on an electric bike in the area of Franklin Street and Nott Terrace. Police said he was wanted for fleeing police the day before for traffic violations.

When approached by officers, police said he fled again on the bicycle and rode into traffic on Veeder Avenue where he was struck by a car. He was seriously injured and taken to Albany Medical Center. His condition is currently unknown.

Police said he will be issued appearance tickets and released from custody to the care of Albany Med. His identity is not being released due to the open investigation and until his family has been notified.

The driver of the vehicle was uninjured and is cooperating with police.

Veeder Avenue between Albany Street and Hamilton Street will be shut down for several hours Tuesday night for reconstruction.
