Larnaca municipality clears away informal beach campsites

The municipality of Larnaca cleared away two illegal beach campsites, removing caravans, vans and other installations.

The operation on Tuesday took on two informal sites that sprung up for the second time along the Larnaca-Dhekelia road, near the Larnaca Marine Club.

“Beaches are a public good and should be accessible to everyone,” a municipality announcement said and warned that with warnings that any new activity of this kind would not be tolerated.

The statement added that consideration for the creation of an official campsite in Larnaca is underway.

The first clean-up of the same area took place at the end if July in cooperation with the police.

Caravans, vans, tents and other makeshift structures were removed after day bathers complained to police about obstructed beach access, noise pollution from nightly parties, and filth.

The municipality cleared away piles of rubbish, however soon after the sweep, the campsite had sprung up again.
