Groundhog Day as Bassett suffer another derby drubbing

0

Corsham Town may have an almost completely different side to that which the Quarrymen fielded last season. But the outcome of Royal Wootton Bassett Town's 2024-25 visit to the Southbank Ground was pretty much the same as that in 2023-24 as Sam Collier and his side suffered another thrashing at the hands of their Wiltshire rivals.

The final score - 5-1 - was slightly less painful than the 7-2 reverse they suffered last season.

But this was yet another humbling at the hands of a team who have had Bassett's number ever since moving across to the Hellenic League.

Corsham led within the opening ten minutes as Isaiah Crawford received a Dylan Lewis and rifled home following a swift counter.

Direct play saw Corsham grab their second on 19 minutes as Javier Blazquez crossed for Charlie Vickers to finish.

They then moved into an unassailable advantage shortly before the break as James Foster brought down Crawford and Lewis made no mistake from the spot.

At 3-0 down Bassett were reeling, though they certainly had chances to have scored at least one of their own in the first half only to be denied by some fine goalkeeping from home shotstopper Kent Kauppinen as well as the woodwork.

A somewhat quieter second half ensued as Bassett sought to limit the damage.

However, Corsham eventually added a fourth as Bradley Selwood set Lewis free and his cut back across the face of goal was turned into the net by a Bassett defender.

Brad Pagliaroli did grab a late consolation as he swung a fine free kick into the top corner.

But Corsham were in no generous mood and Jamarni Langlais grabbed a fifth for the hosts in stoppage time as Corsham rubbed more salt in Bassett's wounds.
