Man arrested, charged with DWI after auto-ped where 2 people died

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A man was arrested and charged with a DWI after allegedly being involved in an auto-pedestrian crash where two people died, according to the Austin Police Department.

APD arrested Edward Rodriguez, 22, in connection with the crash.

APD officers responded to the crash shortly before 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 in the 6500 block of North Lamar Boulevard. Police said the crash involved a vehicle and two pedestrians, and the pedestrians died on the scene.

The pedestrians were identified as Antonio Luis Trevino Maldonado, 22, and Johnny Joe Reyes, 50. 

APD said Rodriguez, who was the driver of the vehicle, stayed on the scene then was arrested on a DWI charge. KXAN is working to find Rodriguez's attorney. KXAN will reach out for a statement on his behalf when that information is available

This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 57th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 61 fatalities for the year.
