DLP barring was to ‘keep the peace’

A list of names was sent to the police prior to the barring of some members from the third day of the Democratic Labour Party’s (DLP) annual conference on Sunday that began with a church service.

Acting president Andre Worrell yesterday took to Starcom Network’s popular radio call-in programme Down To Brass Tacks to explain what took place at the tumultuous DLP conference at the weekend which saw additional police being called in. The spectacle of Saturday and Sunday’s chaotic conference, along with speculation about relationships within the party, formed part of the discussion.

On Sunday, the climax of the three-day conference, a number of people, including long-standing members, were barred from entering DLP headquarters at George Street, St Michael, for the customary service. Among the rejected lot were expelled president Dr Ronnie Yearwood and general secretary Steve Blackett, second vice-president Walter Maloney and president of the Young Democrats, Tyra Trotman.

Worrell, who called the programme, told moderator David Ellis that Yearwood and Blackett had already been made aware through correspondence that they were expelled and should not trespass on the property.
