Afghanistan proposes tripartite meeting for safe return of migrants from Pakistan

0

Pakistani media, citing United Nations officials, report that Kabul has proposed a tripartite meeting to facilitate the safe return of Afghan migrants from Pakistan, involving Pakistani officials and the United Nations.

In a report published on Tuesday, August 27, Express Tribune quoted a UN official saying that the Pakistani government might consider Kabul’s proposal for a tripartite meeting.

The official noted that a tripartite meeting to ensure the safe return of Afghan migrants could effectively find a sustainable solution for their return.

Details of this proposed plan are not yet available, and the Taliban officials have not provided further information.

The Taliban’s request for a tripartite dialogue comes as a high-level UN delegation led by Indrika Ratwatte, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, visits Pakistan to discuss Afghan migrants.

The proposed tripartite meeting underscores the ongoing efforts to address the complex issue of Afghan migrants in Pakistan. As discussions continue, the involvement of international organizations and neighboring governments will be crucial in developing a coordinated and humane solution for the safe return of these migrants.

This occurs against the backdrop of a severe humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, marked by restrictions on women’s and girls’ education and employment. Many returnees facing forced deportation encounter significant challenges, including a lack of shelter, food, and basic necessities.
