Detroit sweeps Chicago and hands them their 101st defeat

I know, shocker. It was another loss and anemic offensive showing by the White Sox. They move to 8-38 against the AL Central and 31-101 overall. To call this season miserable is an understatement. I’ve genuinely run out of words to describe what has happened this year, but here’s a go at what unraveled tonight, anyway.

In those few moments of joy at the beginning of the contest, Chicago wasted no time making rookie Ty Madden feel at home by manufacturing a run in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. With one out, Luis Robert Jr. drew a walk. Then, on a hit-and-run play, Andrew Benintendi reached base on a fielding error by Spencer Torkelson, allowing LRJ to advance to third. Andrew Vaughn followed with a sacrifice fly, plating La Pantera and giving the Good Guys an early 1-0 lead.

Then, in the third inning, Brooks Baldwin singled, Nicky Lopez followed with a walk, and Andrew Vaughn delivered a clutch RBI single with two outs to extend the short-lived lead to 2-0. It’s been nice seeing AV do well lately, but it’s too little too late, honestly.

Davis Martin was tossing the ball well when he ran into a bit of trouble in the fifth. With two outs and the bases empty, he surrendered three consecutive singles, allowing one run to come home. The righthander got out of the jam by striking out Jace Jung to end the frame. Since he left with the lead, he ended up with a no-decision.

The typical bullpen meltdown ensued when Jared Shuster relieved Martin in the sixth. He pitched around a leadoff double but came undone in the seventh when he gave up a solo shot to Parker Meadows. Then, with one out, he walked Matt Vierling and surrendered back-to-back singles to Colt Keith and Jace Jung, giving the Tigers their first lead of the night, 3-2.

Grady Sizemore was over it and pulled Shuster for Justin Anderson, who quickly served up a three-run jack to birthday boy Torkelson, resulting in a 6-2 Detroit advantage. Despite a late oppo taco by Benny in the eighth, which closed the gap to 6-3, the Motor City Kitties ultimately snatched up the win and swept the series.

Tomorrow, the World Series Champion Texas Rangers will mosey on over Guaranteed Rate Field to kick off a three-game series. Garrett Crochet is the Sox’s scheduled starter, and Andrew Heaney gets the ball for the Rangers.
