Mermentau man killed in vehicle-bicycle crash Sunday night
JEFF DAVIS PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- A 49-year-old Mermentau man was killed Sunday night in a vehicle-bicycle crash, Louisiana State Police announced.
The crash, which occurred around 9 p.m. Sunday near Triangle Shell Road in Jeff Davis Parish, claimed the life of Shawn Maris.
State police said Maris was riding a bicycle east on U.S. 90 the same time a 2013 GMC Sierra was also traveling east on that road.
Maris turned left in front of the GMC as it passed his location, state police said.
"The driver of the GMC was unable to avoid a collision and struck the bicycle causing Maris to be ejected," state police said.
Investigators said the bicycle was not equipped with reflectors or lights, and Maris was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Maris died at the scene.
