ODOT to release new I-5 tolling rules, accept public input
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Starting Sept. 1, the Oregon Department of Transportation will accept public input on proposed rules changes related to how the Oregon Transportation Commission will designate tolls and set rates for the Interstate Bridge Replacement program.
ODOT initially planned to toll all of I-205 and a stretch of I-5 in the Portland metro area, starting with one tolling section between the Tualatin River and Abernethy Bridges. However, Gov. Tina Kotek paused all tolling in the state in May of 2023 after citizens expressed serious concerns with ODOT’s plans.
In March of 2024, Kotek sent a letter to the Oregon Transportation Commission, telling the agency to stop pursuing the idea of tolling in the state. However, Oregon and Washington still plan to toll the Interstate Bridge.
“The only tolled facility moving forward is the Interstate Bridge Replacement program, which would be tolled by the Washington State Department of Transportation, with toll rates and policies jointly set by the Washington State Transportation Commission and the Oregon Transportation Commission,” ODOT said.
ODOT will release the proposed rule changes to the public on Sept. 1 and accept public input from Sept. 1 to Oct. 3. A virtual public hearing will be held regarding the changes on Sept. 18 from noon to 1:30 p.m.
ODOT plans to present its proposed rule changes to the OTC for formal approval on Nov. 14.
