'Don't think Kid Rock is enough': Ex-senator mocks Trump's choice of campaign surrogates

Political analysts noted a big difference Monday between the campaigns of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris: the use of surrogates to travel the country and promote the candidate.

Speaking to MSNBC's "Deadline White House," former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) quipped: "What, you guys don't think Kid Rock is good enough? I can't figure that out."

New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay explained that Democrats have a "deep bench" of potential candidates — but the GOP can't say the same. She explained that there's no better example than those who spoke at last week's convention.

"Everyone from Bill Clinton, kind of the elder statesman last week at the DNC, down to much younger folks like Congresswoman [Jasmine] Crockett (D-TX)," said Gay. "It's not just age. There is pretty much someone for everyone right now in the Democratic Party."

She cited midwesterners who have Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) and southerners who have lawmakers like Crockett and others.

"It's actually remarkable," she said. "There's also talent at the state level. We saw it also again at the roll call last week where, you know, the Georgia state Democrats put up Lil Jon. I mean, there is a lot of talent right now in the party, and there is a sense, I think, among some of the Republicans of, hey, how come we can't do fun things? This looks fun."

She cited the show's typical host, Nicolle Wallace, who said several weeks ago that all conventions are, at their best, "invitations for voters to join the fun, join the party."

Democrats embraced that idea where Republicans, she said, were "kind of an angry, bitter, shouting match at the moment."

McCaskill explained that Harris isn't afraid of lifting others, like Crockett.

"Donald Trump doesn't want anybody to upstage him," she continued. "Donald Trump is very worried about — he wants people to look good, and sit down. He doesn't want them ever to get between him and his adoring fans because it's all about him. It's not about lifting up others, it's not about mentoring people."
