Man hunted for attempted murder in Hackney arrested at Notting Hill Carnival

A man hunted for an attempted murder in Hackney in July has been arrested on the last day of Notting Hill Carnival.

He is one of 145 people detained at the event as of 7pm today, bringing the total so far over two days to 249 after the Metropolitan Police introduced a Section 60 order, providing officers with additional search powers.

Carnival celebrations are set to continue into the night across west London, but so far the number of arrests is lower that those in 2023.

Among them is a mother who is fighting for her life after being attacked during ‘family day’, which she attended with her young child.

Some attendees were made to walk through metal-detecting ‘knife arches’ as they arrived at the event.

Officer standing in pairs were dotted along the streets, while a police helicopter hovered above throughout the day.

In addition to the arrests, the force have also confiscated 41 weapons, other than firearms, so far on Monday.

Two people believed to be heading to Carnival were also arrested in Harrow, and a gun was seized from their car.

  • 1 x theft from a person
  • 4 x public order offences
  • 2 x other theft offences
  • 14 x other offences

‘Earlier today, officers were able to stop a car in Harrow, believed to be en route to Carnival, where a firearm was seized and two people arrested,’ the Met said in a statement.

‘Later in the afternoon, officers carried out a search at one of the entry points to Carnival, seizing a further firearm.’

A man who was wanted for an attempted murder in Hackney in July was spotted at Carnival and arrested following a successful stop.

Around one million people are expected to have attended the event over the two-day period.

It is one of the longest-running street parties in the UK, beginning in the 1960s, and is free to all, culminating in a large parade on the second day.
