Dog thrown down trash chute at NY housing complex: police

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (WPIX) — Police are looking for the person who threw a dog down a trash chute at a New York City housing complex and left it trapped and severely injured.

“That’s cold-hearted; I am about to cry," said a resident identified only as Cicely as she looked at a picture of a dog that was tossed down the garbage chute of her high-rise building in Lower Manhattan.

“They need to find out who did it. If they lock these doors downstairs, these things won’t happen, and they won't lock the chutes,” she added.

A source close to the discovery told Nexstar's WPIX that the animal, which had matted fur, had all four legs broken and looked to be in agonizing pain.

Police said the injured dog was found Friday morning in the compactor of building 180 at the Governor Alfred E. Smith complex. Residents claim they had not seen the dog before but want whoever committed this crime behind bars.

The dog was taken to an American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals facility.

The organization told WPIX in a statement: “Sadly, due to severe medical injuries resulting in extreme suffering, this dog, an alleged victim of cruelty, was humanly euthanized to end existing and ongoing pain.”

It is unclear how long the animal was in the compactor before being rescued.
