SC directs states, UTs to provide complete information on open prisons
The Supreme Court has ordered states and Union Territories to provide information on open prisons within four weeks. Open prisons allow convicts to work outside during the day to integrate back into society. Several states and UTs have not responded to the court's request for information. Failure to comply may result in the chief secretaries being summoned. The court sees open jails as a solution to overcrowding and prisoner rehabilitation.
