08/26/2024: Scattered Storms This Afternoon

0

The Latest Storm Tracker Forecast from Meteorologist Kevin Appleby:

Patchy dense fog this morning will yield to a good amount of sunshine prior to lunchtime. An upper level disturbance rotating through the Northeast from Canada will produce scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. It's not out of the question that one or two of those storms could turn severe. High pressure builds briefly for Tuesday before more shower and storm chances arrive Wednesday.

Once the fog burns off, sunshine will boost temperatures into the upper 70s and lower 80s. Isolated thunderstorms will pop around lunchtime off to the north, moving southward and becoming slightly more numerous by mid afternoon.

The severe risk isn't off the charts, but the environment in place across the News10 viewing area may allow for one or two of the storms to turn strong to severe. My main concerns are isolated damaging wind gusts and large hail. Most of us will avoid the severe conditions.

Showers and storms taper this evening with clearing skies. Winds will go calm again, so expect a similarly cool and foggy start to your Tuesday morning.

High pressure is in control Tuesday. After morning fog burns off, expect a good deal of sunshine and seasonably warm conditions.

Keeping a close eye on another potential for severe weather Wednesday. Ahead of a cold front, we will turn muggy, and showers and storms will fire up ahead of the front. Guidance is still very split on exact timing and placement of storms, so we will keep a very close eye on trends over the next 24-36 hours. If we thread a few atmospheric needles, severe storms would be more likely. Stick with us for updates here on that front.

Cooler conditions follow up the muggy, warm, and potentially stormy Wednesday. Temperatures will be in the 70s to near 80 Thursday and Friday, with Friday featuring a low-end chance for a shower or thunderstorm at this time. Unfortunately, Labor Day Weekend looks to start off stormy. It's my hope to improve the forecast over the course of the week, but I can only do that if guidance backs off from what it's outputting right now - widespread showers and storms for Saturday. It does look better for Sunday, although I can't completely rule out spotty showers as of writing this.
