A WOMAN has shown how she transformed a school bus into a tiny home for herself and her fmaily.

Carlene Robbins took to social media to show off the home transformation she did on a budget – including using a bin as a sink.

The mum revealed she bought the bus from their local school system for £2,000 and decided to turn it into a camper van to travel in.

In the post she showed the outside of the van which wasn’t complete yet as she wanted to add an air con system and tires.

Inside the van, was a bunk bed that her husband made for them and the kids – both of which were double beds.

By the door of the bus was a sink and small kitchen counter top – to save money, they used a metal bin instead of a basin.

It seems that they used recycled wood to create boxes about the washing area for extra storage as well.

By the bunk bed was a small sofa that had a large table that could be pulled out so that the family could sit together and have dinner.

She had decorated the inside with a gorgeous flower theme including sunflower table covers, floral door handles and fake flower bouquets.

Updating fans on the progress, Carlene said: “A little update on our School Bus we bought from the local school system to turn it into our camper. Its been about 2 months since we started our build.

“We have the inside almost done we still have flooring and different drivers and passengers seats next on the list… Hubby built some cubbies above sink that lift up and out.We also installed a hot water on demand right at the faucet itself, it works great so there is no need for a hot water heater.

“He built a composting separator toilet so we only need a grey holding tank.”

“We have done all the work hubby is a jack of all trades so no labour, just cost of materials,” Carlene added.

The post was a hit with members of the Small Space Living Facebook group she shared it to with over 300 likes.

People were quick to comment on the brilliant job they did.

One person wrote: “Love what you’ve done! Have fun!”

Are tiny homes legal in the UK?

TINY houses can be UK regardless of whether they are on a trailer base or not. The legality of tiny houses is all to do with where it is and what you use it for.

If you want to put your tiny house in the back garden of the home that you own, and the overall size of your tiny house  does not exceed 19.8m x 6.7m (65ft x 22ft), then good news! You do not require planning permission.

Tiny houses that fit within these dimensions and are constructed on trailer bases are legally classified as caravans, which means you can legally park them within the curtilage of your home without planning permission.

If this is your plan, then it is a legal requirement that you only use the tiny house as additional living space, like an office, a gym, or a studio, but you cannot rent out the space to a tenant.

For those of you who live on farmland, what is defined as curtilage can be complicated. In these cases, and under any circumstances where you are unsure, we recommend that you speak to your local planning officer.

You can put a tiny house on your land as a temporary structure for 28 days, but for any longer than this we recommend that you speak to your local planning officer as different permissions will be required.
