Fabrizio Romano explains Napoli’s stance on Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay transfers

Napoli could make two signings before Friday night’s transfer deadline.

The Italian giants, led by Antonio Conte, are hoping to reinforce their midfield options, and have identified Brighton’s Billy Gilmour and Manchester United’s Scott McTominay as two possible additions.

The players’ situations are complicated though; both featured during Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off at the Amex Stadium.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay to Napoli?

Although still valued by their respective managers, both Gilmour and McTominay face uncertain futures, and discussing Napoli’s stance on the two potential deals, leading transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed interest in the Premier League duo “remains strong”.

“Napoli will sign two midfielders, now they have to decide who. They spoke with [Sofyan] Amrabat, and though they had a bid (€25 million) rejected for McTominay, their interest remains strong,” he told CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing.

Billy Gilmour (centre) and Scott McTominay (right) remain heavily linked with transfers to Napoli.

“They have an agreement in principle for Billy Gilmour but are still waiting on the final green light to confirm his medical and travel. A decision will be made soon, but both McTominay and Gilmour remain on Napoli’s list.

“Let’s see how the conversation goes between Napoli and Man United in the next hours, in the next days, and see what happens with McTominay.”

Napoli have just five days left to do their business. Failure to sign both, or either, Gilmour and McTominay could lead to Conte’s plans for the season being dismantled, and displeasing the fiery 55-year-old is not something president Aurelio De Laurentiis will want to risk.

In terms of their own outgoings, the 2022-23 Serie A winners also remain locked in talks with Chelsea over a possible transfer for striker Victor Osimhen.
