Portland area sees final 8 p.m. sunset until April 2025

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland's final 8 p.m. sunset of the year happens Saturday as nights continue to grow longer and days become shorter.

Saturday's sunset happens at 8:01 p.m. around the Portland metro area. Another 8 p.m. sunset isn't expected until April 17, 2025.

Northern hemisphere sunsets will continue to become earlier as sunrises become later. This progression continues through the winter solstice on December 21, 2024.

The days have progressively gotten shorter since the summer solstice on June 20, 2024. In the month of August, Portland will have lost a total of 85 minutes of daylight.

The lack of daylight and cooler temperatures that follow will help push the Pacific Northwest closer to the autumn season.
