A tourist on holiday in Mauritius was allegedly stabbed to death by a man she met on Tinder, who cut out her tongue.

The body of Russian university teacher, Zaliya Shamigulova, 29, was found mutilated and naked in a shallow grave on the island.

A post mortem showed she had multiple stabs wounds to the chest and her tongue had been cut out.

An IT engineer from Mauritius called Puryavirsingh Sundur, also 29, has been detained after reportedly confessing to her murder.

According to law enforcement sources, Sundur told police he had stabbed and mutilated Ms Shamigulova after blood was found in his car.

He then took them to her grave in a residential area called Marie.

Detectives were still looking for missing body parts as well as her clothing, said local media outlets.

They suspect the killer had intended to cut up her body but instead buried it in a makeshift grave.

Sundur and Ms Shamigulova met on Tinder, according to Russian reports.

One report said Sundur ‘went to take the Russian woman sightseeing on the island, but in a fit of jealous rage, he pulled out a knife and brutally killed his lover before stripping her and burying her body.’

Another said he had been ‘deeply in love with her’ and planned to marry her.

Ms Shamigulova was last seen wearing a white and blue dress on video getting into a blue Toyota car.

She was later reported missing by a female travelling companion.

Her relatives in Russia received messages purportedly from her saying she had decided to disappear and not to contact her.

Before her death she posted online she was ‘catching happiness every day’ on her visit to the island, a popular holiday destination known for its beautiful beaches.

She was due to travel to Madagascar on September 1.

Ms Shamigulova was a university teacher in Chelyabinsk in the Urals and had been a torch bearer ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
