This New Citizen Watch Is the Perfect Marriage of Tradition and Modern Style
Since launching back in 1918, Citizen has consistently made its name as a high-quality watchmaker in an affordable bracket. That's an especially challenging market to corner these days given the multitude of brands now out there. But even among the increasing crowds of competitors, the Japanese brand continues to distinguish itself, thanks to a propensity for developing inspired new timepieces that mix tradition with sharp design and functionality. The latest addition in that vein comes from Citizen's Attesa Collection—inspired by no less than the layers of Earth's crust.

The Attesa watch line launched back in 1987, but this new Earth-inspired design delivers a blend of the collection’s classic chronograph look with modern beauty, including a dial with touches of greens, purples, and blues. Both the case and bracelet are made with scratch-resistant titanium and feature a black diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating. While the timepiece leans large at 44.6mm, it does so without looking oversized or gaudy.
The function side doesn’t leave anything out, either. The watch features Citizen's famed Eco-Drive technology and can be powered by any light source—so there’s no need to ever replace a battery. Water-resistant up to 100 meters, it's also equipped with world time in 27 cities, a 1/20 second chronograph, universal coordinated time (UTC) display, and a perpetual calendar. This kind of functionality, along with the high-end (albeit not quite luxury) materials, has always helped the brand stand out from other more affordable watchmakers.
Compared to the usual Citizen price point, this new Attesa Collection release comes with a rather steep bump at $2,295. This shouldn't be a huge surprise given its limited edition status, with just 1,900 unnumbered pieces being released worldwide. In all, for dedicated Citizen fans, the brand's latest stunner is still a sweet spot for anyone willing to shell out for quality and style without going overboard.
