3 Detroit-area mall guards not guilty of involuntary manslaughter in man’s death in 2014

A jury has found three security guards not guilty of involuntary manslaughter in a man’s death at a Detroit-area mall more than 10 years ago. The verdict came Friday. No charges were filed by the Oakland County prosecutor in 2014. But the case was reopened by the Michigan attorney general. McKenzie Cochran had an enlarged heart and repeatedly said, “I can’t breathe,” while five guards restrained him at Northland Center following a trouble call to security. Cochran was pinned to the ground and restrained for several minutes while guards tried to handcuff him. People in the courtroom applauded and cheered at the three not-guilty verdicts.
