“Tried my best to forget…”: Tristan Stubbs on South Africa’s T20 WC final defeat

South African all-rounder, Tristan Stubbs has still not been able to forget The Proteas’ heartbreaking defeat in the T20 World Cup final against India at the Kensington Oval in June. The defeat added insult to injury for the South Africans and also extended their agonizing wait for an ICC trophy.

Stubbs was a key figure for The Proteas throughout the ICC tournament, scoring 165 runs in 9 matches while batting in the middle-order. He looked threatening in the final too, having scored 31 runs off 21 deliveries in the 177-run chase. However, he was removed by Axar Patel who was also his teammate at IPL franchise, Delhi Capitals.

“T20 WC Final result comes up when you don’t want it to. I’ve tried my best to forget, but it’s not easy. Someone the other night told us about this and you’re like, ‘you don’t have to tell us, if you feel bad for us’…Some things you don’t want to remember,” Stubbs said as quoted by India Today.

The final itself turned out to be a dramatic game for the South Africans as they looked to be on the brink of victory, only requiring 26 runs in 24 balls. But what followed was a masterclass in death bowling by Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya.

The South African batters struggled to cope with the relentless pressure applied by the Indian bowlers, leading to a shocking 7-run defeat. The narrow loss left the side in disbelief, and it seems that the pain of that missed opportunity continues to linger in the minds of the players.
