'Something seems off': Newsom clashes with Fox host as he wonders about Trump's welfare

California Gov. Gavin Newsom went on Fox News just ahead of the Democratic National Convention's final day in Chicago to spar with anchor Bret Baier over the Biden-Harris administration's economic record, where he reminded the audience just how bad he said things were when former President Donald Trump left office.

"If you look at the latest polls, the direction of the country, right direction, 25.3 percent, wrong track, 64.8 percent," said Baier, putting up an average of the latest RealClearPolitics aggregation. "Why?"

"We've been polarized and traumatized," said Newsom the last three and a half years have been difficult. The last six, seven years ..."

"That's the Biden-Harris administration," said Baier.

Newsom clarified that he meant the last few years were difficult because of recovering from the aftermath of the Trump years. "We had 14.8 percent unemployment in April of 2020, we lost 154,000 manufacturing jobs during the Trump years. We are just coming out of this recession, we're finally taming inflation ... It has been a challenging time for this country, for many, many years, even before Biden-Harris."

"And they've done nothing," said Baier.

"We're the envy of the world," shot back Newsom. "Just look at the Wall Street Journal ... Even with the adjustment today of 818,000 jobs, with the adjustment ... that is, Brett, 11 times more than the last three Republican administrations combine. The lowest Black unemployment, Hispanic unemployment, the lowest unemployment for women in our lifetime. And American manufacturing policy, industrial policy, that is worker-centered, that's advantaging red and rural districts in this country more than even blue counties."

"I appreciate all those stats, but when I listen to the speeches, it sounds like you are running against Donald Trump, but it is not. It is Biden-Harris in the White House," said Baier.

"Yeah, but right now you feel the fresh air of progress. You just do," said Newsom. "And there is a stale air of normalcy, a stale air of the past, represented in Donald Trump. I mean this sincerely. I know this tough audience will take it for me. He is derivative. He is less interesting, I am less interested. He is not as entertaining. He seems way off his game. For some time now, since his convention speech, something seems off."
