Larry’s last chance: Will he finally win an Emmy for ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’?

Larry David is no stranger to the Emmy Awards. He has been nominated a whopping 31 times now throughout his career, winning twice for writing and producing “Seinfeld” in 1993. (His Emmy speech remains one of the funniest of all time, as he annoyingly declared, “This is all very well and good, but I’m still bald” — watch below.) Now that “Curb Your Enthusiasm” has wrapped up for good, it’s the last chance for David to finally win an Emmy Award for the long-running HBO comedy series. But what are his chances?

The funnyman received a pair of farewell nominations this year, for Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Series. This marks David’s seventh acting bid for playing a fictionalized version of himself, and he’s lost to some truly iconic TV stars over the years: Tony Shalhoub for “Monk” (2003 and ’06), Kelsey Grammer for “Frasier” (2004), Jim Parsons for “The Big Bang Theory” (2010), Jon Cryer for “Two and a Half Men” (2012), and Bill Hader for “Barry” (2018).

For this 2024 Emmys contest, he is competing against fellow lead actors Matt Berry (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”), Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”), Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (“Reservation Dogs”). Gold Derby’s odds overwhelmingly favor White to prevail for the second time in a row for his FX cooking dramedy; David currently places fourth in our combined rankings.

David entered the episode titled “Vertical Drop, Horizontal Tug” as his 2024 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Actor. In this installment, the Larry David character returns from Atlanta after being arrested for giving water to a friend waiting in line to vote. After flirting with actress Sienna Miller, he has a verbal dispute at a neighbor’s memorial service over a lemon tree. Later, Larry angers Oscar-winning actor Troy Kotsur when he uses a stolen golf tip and accidentally hits him with the ball.

As for the main race, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” holds a unique record: it’s the most nominated comedy series (11 bids) in Emmy history without ever winning. Its first bid came in 2002, when “Friends” prevailed, and it most recently lost to “Ted Lasso” in 2022. In total, “Curb” has amassed 55 total Emmy nominations over the past 22 years, winning two trophies for picture editing (2012) and directing (2003).

“Curb Your Enthusiasm’s” rival nominees in Best Comedy Series this year are “The Bear,” “Hacks,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Abbott Elementary,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Reservation Dogs” and “Palm Royale.” Gold Derby’s Experts, Editors and Users almost unanimously predict that “The Bear” will triumph yet again, while “Curb” comes in fifth place.
