'Why are you there': Ex-GOP chair questions Trump's rallies in red state 'safe space'

Donald Trump has spent the past several weeks holding events in red states and red areas of swing states, leading one former Republican Party chair to question the strategy.

MSNBC reporter Vaughn Hillyard pointed out former President Barack Obama's speech during the Democratic convention. Among the things he mocked was Trump's obsession with crowd sizes. While Harris is bringing in huge crowds, Hillyard said that Trump can still have rallies with large crowds.

"The reality for Donald Trump is the frustration of his campaign team," said Michael Steele, who now co-hosts a weekend show for the network. "He is not expanding his base vote. So, yeah, you're going to a county where you won 55 percent of the vote the last time. Why are you there? Why are you in a deeply red part of the country?"

He said that Trump should be shifting now that the terms of the race have shifted.

"You've seen the campaign and his own personal inability to grapple with the fact that he's going to be standing on a stage in about three weeks against a formidable prosecutor who will prosecute the case against her, him, who happens to be an African American woman," Steele continued.

It is clear that Trump can't deal with it, he said.

"So he's going to his safe space. He's going to a place where he can ask dumb questions and get dumb responses because the reality of it is he doesn't know how to expand beyond that," Steele explained. He noted that it will be a big problem for the campaign as Labor Day approaches.
