I’m a Boots Beauty expert – these are the best sunscreens to wear under makeup and one costs less than £10
FINDING a sunscreen that doesn’t mess up your makeup can feel like a never-ending quest.
Luckily for us, Boots Beauty Specialist Leanna Zaman has shared her expert picks for sunscreens that work perfectly under makeup while still providing essential sun protection.

Whether you prefer a setting mist, powder, or traditional lotion, there’s something here to suit every preference – and budget.
“We all know we should be wearing daily sunscreen, but concerns over ruining your makeup can put you off applying it,” says Leanna.
“Thankfully, there are plenty of clever product formats and techniques that mean you don’t have to compromise on either sun protection or your look.”

Leanna also explains that the SPF in makeup formulas isn’t always enough, but can be a nice addition as you reapply throughout the day.
“SPF in cosmetics is there to give us a little extra protection, but don’t rely on it as your sole source of sun protection,” she says.
“The formulas are often thinner and don’t always allow for even coverage, plus you will typically apply less product than you need to sufficiently protect your skin.”
Leanna recommends starting the day with a teaspoon-sized amount of broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF30 to your face after your morning skincare routine and allowing it to settle for at least 10 minutes.
“Then apply your primer, foundation or other cosmetics.”
SPF needs to be topped up regularly, especially if you’re outdoors for long periods.
Always apply a generous layer in the morning and choose a format that works for you to reapply throughout the day

“Always apply a generous layer in the morning and choose a format that works for you to reapply throughout the day,” says Leanna.
“Consistency is key – whether that’s using a mist, stick, or powder, find what fits your routine best so you can keep your skin protected without compromising your look.”
Whether you’re after a budget-friendly staple or a high-performance multitasker, these expert-recommended face sunscreens ensure you can keep your skin safe from harmful rays without sacrificing your makeup look.

Which SPF is best?
Bubble Plus One Tinted Daily Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 (£19)
Why we like it: With a broad-spectrum SPF 30, the mineral Bubble Plus One Tinted Mineral Sunscreen offers ample protection against UVA and UVB rays while also evening out your skin tone with its natural tint.
The formula contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, making it a great choice for sensitive skin types or those prone to breakouts.
Leanna advises allowing your sunscreen to settle for at least 10 minutes before applying your makeup.
At just under £20, it’s excellent value for a product that performs as well as more premium alternatives.
- Buy if: For those who want protection and a hint of coverage, the Bubble Plus One Tinted Mineral Sunscreen is a winner. Ideal for those ‘no-makeup’ makeup days, it layers seamlessly under your foundation and feels weightless on the skin.
- Skip if: You need greater UV protection.
Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick Mugwort and Camellia SPF 50+ (£15.50)
Why we like it: With a high SPF of 50+, the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick is packed with mugwort and camellia to soothe and protect your skin without clogging pores.
It glides on effortlessly, leaving a soft, shine-free finish that’s perfect for those with oily or combination skin.
Sun sticks are brilliant for precision application, especially for harder-to-reach areas like around the nose and lips
Leanna suggests using this for quick touch-ups throughout the day, as the solid format won’t disturb your makeup.
“Sun sticks are brilliant for precision application, especially for harder-to-reach areas like around the nose and lips,” she notes.
- Buy if: For those constantly on the go, this innovative sun stick is a game-changer. The convenient stick design means you can pop it in your bag for easy reapplication whenever needed.
- Skip if: You need a richer formula because you have very dry skin.
The Beauty Crop Vitamin Babe SPF 30 Setting Mist (£18)
Why we like it: Setting mists with SPF is having a moment, and The Beauty Crop’s Vitamin Babe mist is one to watch.
This lightweight spray is enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, giving your skin a protective boost while keeping your makeup looking fresh.
The mist is ultra-fine, so you won’t have to worry about splotches or uneven application.
Leanna adds, “SPF in setting mists is great for midday top-ups, especially when you don’t want to add more layers of product”.
- Buy if: You want an easy way to top up coverage. Simply spritz it over your face to set your makeup and add an extra layer of sun protection – perfect for those who prefer a fuss-free, multi-tasking product.
- Skip if: You are not a fan of mists and sprays.
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 30 (£35)
Why we like it: Supergoop! has become synonymous with high-quality sun care, and the Unseen Sunscreen is one of its cult products for a reason.
This completely clear, gel-like formula is perfect for those who want a primer and sunscreen in one. It has a silky, velvety finish that grips makeup, making it a brilliant base for foundation.
Look for invisible gels that won’t leave a white cast or disrupt your foundation
Leanna recommends this type of formula for makeup lovers: “Look for invisible gels that won’t leave a white cast or disrupt your foundation.”
- Buy if: Although it’s on the pricier side, the texture and versatility make it worth the investment if you’re after something that feels invisible on the skin but still offers broad-spectrum protection.
- Skip if: You are on a budget.
Boots DermaCare Ceramides Moisturising Lotion SPF 30 (£8)
Why we like it: If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option that doesn’t skimp on quality, the Boots DermaCare Ceramides Moisturising Lotion ticks all the boxes.
At under a tenner, it combines SPF 30 with ceramides to help maintain your skin’s natural barrier while providing hydration.
This fragrance-free formula is lightweight and fast-absorbing, making it an ideal option for those with sensitive skin or anyone prone to dryness.
- Buy if: It’s great for those who need to apply sunscreen on a budget without compromising on effectiveness.
- Skip if: You’re looking for a simpler way to reapply throughout the day.
Supergoop! (Re)setting 100% Mineral Powder SPF 30 (£29)
Why we like it: For midday touch-ups, sunscreen powder is your best friend.
Supergoop!’s (Re)setting Mineral Powder not only helps to top up your sun protection but also works to mattify your complexion – perfect for keeping shine at bay.
The brush applicator makes it easy to dust over your face without disrupting your makeup, and the translucent finish means it’s suitable for all skin tones.
Powder sunscreens are great for absorbing excess oil while preventing your scalp and hairline from burning
Leanna recommends powders like this for extra protection on areas often forgotten, such as the scalp.
“Powder sunscreens are great for absorbing excess oil while preventing your scalp and hairline from burning,” she says.
- Buy if: You like the additional mattifying effect of the powder formula for keeping you shine-free.
- Skip if: You’re not a fan of powder products.
